Blurb

We’re thirteen girls, captive, slave to our master.

A master we’ve never seen.
Obedience will become all we know in our shallow existence. It is the only emotion we’re permitted to feel.
When we’re bad, we’re punished. When we’re good, we’re rewarded.
Our scars run deep. Yet we survive, because we have to…
because HE teaches us to.
All of us are special, we feel it with everything we are.
He has us for a reason, but it’s a reason we don’t know.
We’ve never seen his face, but we know that something deeply broken lies beneath the darkness. With every touch, with every punishment, we know it.
Then something changed.
He showed me who he truly is.
Now I want him.
I’ll go against everything I know to be with him.

A monster.

My monster.

Loving him is a sin, but a sinner I am. I won’t stop until I see every part of him. Even the parts he keeps locked deep down inside.

I am Number Thirteen, and this is my story.

My Review

There are a few reasons why I was super excited to read this book:

  • Bella Jewel is the author
  • It is a standalone novel
  • It is a dark romance

As a romance reader, the books usually end in a happy ever after. There may be a cliffhanger but, when all is said and done, the HEA happens. That is one of the things I love best about romance. There is some sort of drama keeping them apart but in the end, they work our their differences or remove whatever threat there was and everyone is happy, the end.

Dark romances are different. There isn’t the typical pregnancy/cheating/player or whatever drama. People in these books are damaged. Something has happened in their life that has marked them forever and it keeps them feeling a part of the rest of the world. The only way they feel they fit in is if they find other people like them. These books usually include drugs and sex trafficking; the ugly parts of life that people like to ignore to stay in their happy bubbles.

Don’t get me wrong, I like being in my rainbow filled happy bubble. Escaping reality is a perk of reading. But sometimes…. sometimes I want to read something different. I want to read something that isn’t smiley faces and simple misunderstandings.

Broken people who meet know each other in a way that not everyone has. For example, their understanding of how situations affect each other is a true comfort. They may be broken, but they are not alone. This is one of those books and then some. The people involved still have normal problems (a similar background doesn’t mean they all have compatible personalities) but they still have a connection.

I don’t know if you read the prologue but it is intense! This book isn’t about sex. Sex happens but the dynamic of relationships are different from the normal read. This book isn’t normal. It is exceptional.

While this is a dark romance, do not try to compare it to others you have read. This is its own thing. I dislike it when people compare one book or series to another. Not every vampire book is Twilight and not every BDSM book is Fifty Shades of Grey. The same goes for Dark Romance.

This book has made my list of favorites for 2014. I think you will love it.
